Deterrence à la Carte: French, American and British Nuclear Roles in a New Security Environment

Russian pressure on Europe is intensifying, while the durability of the US commitment to European security is increasingly questioned. This panel will take stock of nuclear deterrence for the continent, examining French, American and British perspectives, as well of those of Europe’s non-nuclear states. It will explore the credibility of US extended deterrence and NATO’s nuclear posture, and the impact of France’s recent forward deterrence initiative. It will consider whether Europe can move towards a new, shared architecture for nuclear deterrence, or whether competing national ideas will lead to fragmentation.
