A Sea of Troubles: Japan Between Two Revisionist Powers

China and Russia are increasing their military cooperation in the Indo-Pacific theatre, upping military pressure on Japan and the U.S. China has been improving its operational capability to operate beyond the Second Island Chain, while Russia — despite its ongoing war against Ukraine — regularly conducts joint military exercises and operations near Japan. Despite their caution of getting drawn into each other’s conflicts, both are facilitating each other’s military and strategic objectives in the theatre, ultimately eroding Japan’s security and increasing the risk of miscalculation.

This session looks at the most recent Russia-China military activities around Japan, how U.S.-Japan have responded and what the future holds for regional security.
