Jürgen-Joachim von Sandrart

Commander, NATO Multinational Corps Northeast

Lieutenant General Jürgen-Joachim von Sandrart has served as the Commander of NATO’s Multinational Corps Northeast in Szczecin, Poland, since November 2021. In this position, he is expected to prepare the Corps to carry out the full range of military operations through the northeastern area of responsibility and beyond. Throughout his military career—which spans more than thirty years—he has served in various capacities for both the German Bundeswehr and within the NATO force structure. Beginning his career within the Panzerbataillons, he commanded the Panzerlehrbataillon 93 in Munster before gaining international and policy experience as the Assistant Chief of Military Policy of the Armed Forces Staff. Following that assignment, he completed various postings with the Federal Ministry of Defence (FMoD), to include a tour in Afghanistan. After being promoted to a general officer, Lt Gen von Sandrart has commanded and led multiple units, to include the Armoured Infantry Brigade 41, a deputy role in the DEU SHAPE detachment, being the FMoD Head of Office of the Chief of Defence, and the 1st Armoured Division. He holds a degree in economics from Hamburg Armed Forces University.
