Johnny Stringer
Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, KCB CBE MA FRAeS RAF
Air Chief Marshal Sir Johnny Stringer was selected for promotion to Air Chief Marshal and appointed Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe in March 2026, having been knighted in the 2025 King's Birthday Honours. He served as Deputy Commander of NATO Allied Air Command from August 2022 to October 2025, following a professional industrial placement in 2021–22. Promoted in February 2018, he was Chief of Staff Joint Forces Command and then Director Strategy in UK Strategic Command from January 2020 to March 2021, leading the Command's engagement on the UK Government's 2021 Integrated Review. From October 2016 to October 2017, he commanded No.83 Expeditionary Air Group as UK Air Component Commander, directing national air operations against Daesh and across the Middle East, for which he was awarded the CBE in the May 2018 Operational Honours List. He was ACOS Ops at HQ Air Command from August 2015, and commanded RAF Coningsby and its Typhoon Wing from October 2012 to September 2014, supporting national and overseas Typhoon operations and displaying the Spitfire and Hurricane with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. He returned to New College, Oxford, as a visiting Trenchard Fellow in 2011, after two years as DACOS Joint Effects in the J3 Division of the UK Permanent Joint Headquarters at Northwood, and commanded 29 Squadron, the Typhoon Operational Conversion Unit, from 2007 to 2009. A Qualified Weapons Instructor, he joined the Jaguar Force at RAF Coltishall in 1993 and flew operationally over the former Yugoslavia and in enforcement of the Northern Iraq No Fly Zone. Born in Sale, he was educated at New College, Oxford, and is a graduate of the UK Advanced and Higher Command and Staff Courses and the Royal College of Defence Studies, with master's degrees from Oxford and King's College London.
