Charles Fries

Deputy Secretary General for Peace, Security and Defence at European External Action Service

Charles Fries is the Deputy Secretary-General of the European External Action Service (EEAS) in charge of Peace, Security and Defence (DSG-DEF), a job he has held since 2020. From 2012 to 2020, he served as Ambassador of France to Morocco and then Turkey. He was also French Ambassador to the Czech Republic (2006-09). Mr Fries’ previous appointments include Diplomatic Advisor to the French Prime Minister (2009-12), Advisor for European Affairs to the French President Jacques Chirac (2002-06) and to the French Foreign Minister (1993-95). Throughout his career, Mr Fries has held a number of other senior positions in the French Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Prime Minister’s Office, including Secretary-General for European affairs.
