Boris Pistorius

Federal Minister of Defence of Germany

Boris Pistorius has been the German Federal Minister of Defence since 19 January 2023. In his capacity as Minister of Defence, he is the highest-ranking superior of all soldiers as well as the commander in chief of the armed forces in peacetime. He is the head of the Bundeswehr administration and thus also responsible for the entire civilian staff of the Bundeswehr and the ministry. Before his appointment, from 2013 on, he was Minister of the Interior and Sport in the state government of Lower Saxony. From 2006 until 2013, he was Lord Mayor of Osnabrück city. Prior to that role, he had been serving the city of Osnabrück as a councillor, with a particular political emphasis on finance, economic development, and urban development. Before his public service career, he studied law at the Osnabrück and Münster universities and completed his military service.
